The American Physiology Society’s Arthur C. Guyton Award

An assistant professor of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics at the School of Medicine at Boston University, Dr. Richard Wainford pursues research into sodium homeostasis and blood pressure regulation outside of his responsibilities as an educator. In 2014, he won the Arthur C. Guyton Award for Excellence in Integrative Physiology.

Presented by the American Physiological Society, the Arthur C. Guyton Award for Excellence in Integrative Physiology has honored notable scientists since 1993. It was created in honor of Arthur C. Guyton, a researcher who focused on feedback control and mathematical modeling of physiological systems. Recipients follow his tradition of physiological research by studying integrative and quantitative methods for understanding feedback control. Recognizing individuals whose academic rank is no higher than assistant professor, the award also bestows approximately $15,000 for use in research.

Dr. Richard Wainford accepted the award at the 2014 Experimental Biology Meeting. Held from April 26 to 30 at the San Diego Convention Center, the event welcomed more than 14,000 scientists from around the world active in research in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and related fields. It also featured professionals discussing topics ranging from macrovascular development/aging and fluid balance to lung physiology and vasomotor control.
